Sometimes, teeth may need to be pulled due to significant damage caused by trauma or decay. We work with our patients to determine whether a tooth can be saved or if it should be extracted. We also make sure our patients are aware of their options once the tooth is pulled and we ensure the appropriate follow-up measures are taken. If you are wondering whether you are a candidate for teeth extraction, contact our practice today to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists to review your specific situation.

WHY WOULD YOU GET A TOOTH PULLED?

There are a number of reasons why you may need to get a tooth extracted. Here are some of the most common reasons:

  • Some teeth need to be pulled for the sake of orthodontia to properly align teeth.
  • When serious tooth decay has extended to the pulp (the center of the tooth) it can lead to an infection that may be beyond curing. If the infection can be cured with antibiotics, we will typically do a root canal procedure.
  • Sometimes periodontal disease can infect the tissues and bones that surround your teeth, causing them to become loose.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS?

The procedure for tooth extraction will occur in one visit. We will make sure you are comfortable and will be sure to apply a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding area. If several teeth need to be extracted, we’ll be sure to use a general anesthetic to ensure complete comfort. We will go ahead and remove the tooth which may conclude in stiches.

Before the tooth extraction takes place, our dentists will discuss with you some of the options to consider once the tooth is gone. This might include other services we provide, such as dental implants or a dental bridge.

TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF AFTER SURGERY

Ensuring you have a successful recovery is a top priority for us. Here are some tips (along with those that we will provide you during your visit) on how to take care of yourself post-surgery:

  • Take the prescribed pain killers we’ll provide you to help control the discomfort.
  • Consider using an ice pack outside your mouth to help minimize pain and swelling.
  • Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water several times a day will also be a way to reduce swelling and pain.
  • Be sure to diligently change your gauze pads.
  • Immediately after surgery, you’ll want to focus on relaxing and decreasing your physical activity to avoid excessive bleeding.
  • Eat soft foods to help with recovery and avoid using sucking motions (like using a straw).
